For when you need backup to have "The Talk"
FAQ for Parents
I have been teaching comprehensive, fact based, inclusive, sex positive education since 2012. I have primarily focused on Middle and High School aged students, and have hosted public presentations and forums on consent and safer sex for adults. I'm available for public classes, small groups, and one on one sessions to address particular concerns.
The Talk
Sex ed isn't just about Sex. I also discuss consent, interpersonal respect, diversity, personal safety and positive communication strategies.
My Philosophy
I believe that if students are given all of the best and most accurate information and empowered to make their own choices that they are more likely to make the right one. Not just when it comes to sex, but in all aspects of life. If I can help prepare them for some of the real challenges they'll face in their lives, then I've done my job.
What do "Sex Positive" and "Fact Based" mean?
Sex positive does not mean that I encourage my students to have sex. It means that instead of making students feel ashamed or angry about their sexuality we speak openly about it and answer any and all questions without judgment. To the best of my ability all information presented is factually accurate, medically sound and up to date. *Disclaimer:Â I am not a doctor*
How do you make sure what you're talking about is age appropriate?
I prefer to divide my students by age group, trying to keep students with in a year or two of their peers. Students are exposed to sex at an increasingly young age so I let them sort of guide the discussion with their questions and concerns. As far as the materials I bring, any images I use (mostly in the discussion of anatomy) are from anatomy text books.
Will you tell parents what is discussed?
Encouraging communication between students and parents is one of the cornerstones of my teaching and I will be happy to provide an overview of topics discussed each class in order to facilitate that. However, I respect the privacy of my students and that expectation of privacy is one of the reasons they can feel free to have open and honest conversations with me. I only make an exception if I believe the student is a danger to themselves or others.
I have specific questions about my student's needs.
I always hold a parents' meeting before any public class where I go over the content in detail and discuss any particular concerns up front. I also am happy to tailor courses to students particular needs and challenges. If you have more questions please don't hesitate to email me at MagicCondomFairy@gmail.com
